Reddit’s share of ChatGPT citations fell 86% in August. It’s also in 87.8% of Google’s US forum results and ChatGPT is still searching ten years of its threads. What Reddit SEO means now, what changed, and how we do it for brands.
Reddit is in 87.8% of Google’s US forum results, and the share is rising. ChatGPT is searching ten years of its threads for commercial questions, sometimes one subreddit by name. The one Reddit number that fell in August was the citation chip in one product, on some queries.
So yes, Reddit still matters for AI search, and it matters for Google more than it did a year ago. What changed is how you should measure it, and which kind of Reddit work survives.
We run a AI SEO agency with reddit marketing services, so I’d say that. The evidence below is ours and everyone else’s.
Reddit SEO in 2026 is two jobs
The first job is the one it has always been. Reddit threads rank on Google for the questions people ask before they spend money. Best X. X vs Y. Is X worth it. X reviews reddit. If your brand is in those threads, in a good light, you’re in the buyer’s shortlist before they reach your site.
The second job is newer. The same threads are what AI assistants read when they answer those questions. ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity and Gemini all fetch Reddit, and what the threads say about a brand shapes what the assistant says.
Both jobs are done by the same threads. That’s the whole reason Reddit SEO is worth a specialist, and the reason a chart about one product can’t answer the question.
On Google, Reddit is still everywhere
Ahrefs looked at 145 million US search results on 27 August. The Discussions and forums feature appears in 11.7% of them. Reddit is in 87.8% of those, 83.9% worldwide, and August’s partial data had it at 86.1%. Facebook Groups came second at 38.3%, Quora third at 32%.
That feature is the visible part. Reddit also ranks in the ordinary organic results for commercial questions, and it’s the kind of question that decides a purchase. For a supplements brand we prepared a report for in March, Reddit threads were on page one across categories with more than 700,000 monthly searches between them. “Best prenatal vitamins” alone is 74,000 searches a month, and the threads ranking for it were recommending the brand’s competitors by name.
Google’s AI surfaces moved a little over the summer. Promptwatch’s data has Reddit’s share of citations in AI Overviews easing from about 2.5% in early July to about 2.1% in August, and AI Mode from 2.22% to 1.54%. Axios put those at an 11% and a 31% decline. Both are drifts.
August, in ChatGPT
On 18 August a chart went round saying Reddit had been almost wiped from ChatGPT’s sources. Klaas Foppen posted it, and the data behind it came from Promptwatch. Reddit had held 3.83% of ChatGPT Search citations from 18 July to 7 August, one of the largest shares of any domain. On 14 August it fell under 1%. From 14 to 17 August it averaged 0.52%.
An 86% drop in a week, measured across millions of real ChatGPT answers. The replies split between celebration and panic. One tweet, from Tim Haldorsson, said he wouldn’t want to be running a Reddit AI SEO agency right now. Reddit’s share price was down 3.8% the same day.
A citation is the footnote chip under an answer. It means ChatGPT fetched a page and bound a sentence of the answer to it. It isn’t a measure of what the model knows about Reddit, what it learned from Reddit during training, or what it read on the way to the answer. A chart of citation share can only see the finished answer.
Promptwatch said as much. They called the size of the drop provisional and couldn’t rule out a collection problem on their side. OpenAI told Yahoo Tech it doesn’t set a fixed level of visibility for any site and that ChatGPT still cites Reddit.
It has also happened before. Semrush’s study of 230,000 prompts saw ChatGPT’s Reddit citations fall from around 60% of responses to around 10% between August and September 2025, then recover. Semrush put the current drop next to that one and said it was too early to call 0.5% the new normal.
The traffic under the chart
I’m one of the founders here, and I spent the fortnight after the chart reading ChatGPT’s network traffic, the searches it writes for itself before it answers. The full teardowns are on my own site, here and here. The part that matters to a brand fits in three captures.
The first is from 20th August, in the middle of answering “best AI live chat support software”.
fast|best AI live chat support Intercom Gorgias Zendesk Ada Tidio Crisp reddit|365|reddit.com
Reddit is named in the query words, the domain slot points at reddit.com, and the number is a freshness window in days. Every brand search in the same call got 30 days. The Reddit search got 365, and Intercom, Gorgias, Zendesk, Ada, Tidio and Crisp are in there with it. So this search didn’t ask Reddit which live chat tools are good. It asked Reddit what people say about six tools the model had already chosen.
Then it read what came back. 84 of the 221 pages in that conversation’s retrieval pool were Reddit threads, more than from any other source. The answer cited Reddit zero times out of eleven citations. Reddit fetched in bulk, for opinion, about a shortlist that came from memory, and credited for nothing. Whether those 84 threads shaped the verdicts is my interpretation, and the wire can’t confirm it.
The second is a local question about coffee in Dubai, the same week.
fast|site:reddit.com Dubai Marina specialty coffee Dubai|3650|reddit.com
A 3,650 day window. Ten years of Reddit, on a question where news sites got seven days.
The third is from 24 August, for “whatnot seller tips”.
fast|site:reddit.com/r/whatnotapp seller tips Whatnot live selling|3650|reddit.com
One subreddit, chosen by name before anything was fetched, with the same ten year window. 48 of the 71 pages it retrieved were Reddit threads, and six of the eight citations in the answer went to r/whatnotapp threads.

| Query | Pages fetched | From Reddit | Citations | Won by Reddit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| whatnot seller tips | 71 | 48 | 8 | 6 |
| best AI live chat support software | 221 | 84 | 11 | 0 |
Four days apart, same account, both commercial questions. One gave Reddit three quarters of the visible credit. The other fetched 84 threads and credited none of them. Reddit citation is query dependent rather than switched off. My guess at the difference, and it’s only a guess, is that Whatnot is a niche marketplace where the practical seller knowledge sits in one subreddit and nowhere else, while live chat software is a vendor category with pricing pages and comparison sites competing for the same claims. When the best source is a forum, the forum still wins the chip.
Ryan Jones argued that Bing had stopped ranking Reddit for commercial queries and ChatGPT, which sits on Bing, lost it too. The Bing half holds. I ran his four queries plus two of my own and reddit.com appears zero times in the HTML of all six result pages. The ChatGPT half doesn’t, because a retrieval pool that’s 68% Reddit can’t come from an index with no Reddit in it. Reddit reaches the model some other way, and OpenAI’s own index or the licensed feed from the Reddit partnership it signed in May 2024 are the candidates.
Jenny Halasz asked whether OpenAI’s crawlers were being served Reddit’s restricted robots.txt. Reddit’s public file is Disallow: / for everyone, and the permissive one goes to verified partner IP ranges, so nobody outside OpenAI can see what OpenAI’s crawlers receive. The 68% pool is the insider’s view.
A ten year window is hard to game
Nobody at OpenAI has said why Reddit gets a year to a decade when brands get a month. What follows is our reading, not a finding.
A model that deliberately reads ten years of threads is hard to game in a quarter. A campaign of new brand mentions is a small signal against a decade of history. And there are two filters in the captures. The shortlist is chosen first, from memory, and Reddit is consulted about it second. Flooding Reddit with mentions of a brand that isn’t already on the shortlist buys very little, because the question Reddit is being asked is what people think of the names already in the running.
There may also be a deterrence effect. When citation studies say Reddit is dead, the spam leaves. The Verge reported at the end of August that subreddit moderators are dealing with a subtler wave of AI SEO spam, brands trying to get mentioned in threads because the mentions have become valuable. A mechanism that discounts recent, thin activity is what you’d build in response.
The data is being paid for either way. Reddit’s other revenue line, which is mostly data licensing, grew 24% to $43 million in the quarter it reported on 30 July, and Google and OpenAI are its two biggest licensing customers. Whether the chips show or not, the threads are going in.
Opinions form on Reddit before the buyer opens ChatGPT
When I pulled apart how ChatGPT picks sources on commercial prompts in June, the division of labour was clear. Facts came from official pages. Verdicts came from third parties, and Reddit was chief among them. The August captures say the verdicts are still being gathered from the same place. The credit moved.
SE Ranking and Ahrefs have both measured this at scale. SE Ranking’s study of 129,000 domains found that domains with millions of mentions on Reddit and Quora were roughly four times as likely to be cited by ChatGPT as domains with minimal activity. Ahrefs’ 75,000 brand study put branded web mentions at a 0.66 to 0.71 correlation with visibility across ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews, and the earlier AI Overviews version of the same study found brands in the bottom half by mentions were essentially invisible.
Neither study can see inside the model either. What they measure is the same thing the captures show. The brands AI names are the brands the web already talks about, and a large share of that talking happens on Reddit before the buyer ever opens ChatGPT.
Our approach to Reddit
We’ve been working Reddit for clients for years, and it started on the research side. My co-founder Andy published our Reddit keyword research method on Keyword Insights in January 2024, after a Search Engine Journal guide on tangential SEO the year before that hinted at it. Since then we’ve built a quite a lot of internal tooling for Reddit, and Keyword Insights clusters them so the same question asked a hundred ways shows up as one topic.
A new skincare brand with no domain authority reached nearly 6,000 organic visitors a month within four months that way. We scraped thousands of real questions from r/SkincareAddiction and r/Skincare and clustered them. The content plan came from the clusters, and content did all of it, without backlinks or paid media. The case study has the method.

The visibility side is slower, and it’s the part most agencies get banned doing. Our rules haven’t changed since we started, and the August captures are a good argument for them.
Real people, real usernames, in the subreddits that already rank for the client’s category on Google. We map those first, because a thread that ranks is doing both jobs at once.
Questions the community has, seeded where they’re welcome, and answered properly. A brand gets mentioned where a mention is the useful answer, disclosed where disclosure is due, and nowhere else. Every account is a real person who takes part in that community, and every mention is one they’d make under their own name anyway.
Time. Our campaigns run for a year or more, because that’s how long it takes for a presence to become part of a community’s record. A decade wide search doesn’t find anything younger.
Measurement by mention rather than by chip. We track mention share per question across ChatGPT, AI Overviews and AI Mode. Then the Google rankings of the threads that mention the client, and the referrals they send. A citation count in one product tells you about that product this month.
Where an unflattering thread is already ranking, the same approach applies in reverse. Fresh, honest discussion that search engines prefer to rank, rather than reports and takedowns that rarely work.
Every engagement starts with the same report we’d send a prospect. The threads that already rank for the category, what they say about the brand and who they name instead, and the questions in them nobody has answered well.
What changed, and what didn’t
| Changed | Didn’t change |
|---|---|
| The visible citation chip, in one product, on some queries, this month | ChatGPT fetching Reddit, at volume, with long windows |
| The measurable payoff for a Reddit campaign counted in chips | The training signal, paid for under licence |
| Reddit’s Google rankings for commercial questions | |
| The humans reading threads before they buy |
If you’ve been doing Reddit properly, the chart cost you a footnote. If you were flooding threads with mentions to move a citation tracker, the chart is the least of your problems, because the moderators are catching it and the model is built to discount it.
What we’re watching
OpenAI can change the fan out logic again next month and move the line the other way. It has before. So we’re re-running the same commercial prompts through the same account through September, counting Reddit in the retrieval pool, in the site: lines and in the citations, and we’ll update this post when the picture changes.
If Reddit is part of how buyers decide in your category, the ten years of threads the model reads matter more than the chip it shows this month. We’ll pull those threads, the questions in them, and who gets named instead of you, and send it over. Every Reddit programme we run starts there. Reddit marketing at Snippet Digital.
